A striking new voice in Australian music, today Lewis Coleman releases debut single & video, ‘Animal’. To celebrate, Lewis will launch ‘Animal’ live at The Evelyn Hotel, Fitzroy on Thursday 10 October.
Written, performed, recorded and produced by Lewis in his inner-city Melbourne bedroom, ‘Animal’ is beautifully dark, undeniably melodic and the perfect introduction to the world of Lewis Coleman. Created while in his final semester of an Interactive Composition degree at the Victorian College of the Arts, Lewis chose to deliberately limit himself when writing and recording ‘Animal’ in order to find unique sounds. “I’m not entirely sure why,” Coleman says, reflecting on recording the track, “but I used my laptop microphone to record the acoustic guitar part. After reading an article called “Shitty is Pretty” by Gabriel Roth I was maybe feeling confident one could make any recording method work. I found it had this really roomy, intense quality to it and I feel like the other layers were just pulled out/inspired by that mood.” Describing the moment of inspiration for the track as “pretty insular in nature”, ‘Animal’ unravels deliberately. Growing out from that initial acoustic guitar, each layer responds to the one before it, with Lewis’ disarming voice breezily weaving through the musical soundscape. The result is a truly immersive experience. “I remember thinking about it early on as a rolling dust ball, hot tempered and short lived,” Coleman says. “The lyrics were inspired by any kind of overbearing thought process or mood state taking hold, ballooning out over everything, built hastily and fragmented.” With this captivating debut release, Lewis Coleman has set himself up as a unique and truly exciting new musical force.
