Picking up at full speed from where they left off with her last award-winning release (Thieves, 2016), Tracy McNeil & The GoodLife celebrate the release of Not Like a Brother (out May 3), the second single from her upcoming fifth studio album, You Be The Lightning - due for release in October 2019.
Serving as the emotional centrepiece to the album, the track sinks into a deeper daydream. There is a yearning in McNeil’s vocal, spilling secrets, like a page fallen from a diary. They are the words of someone who longs to feel alive.
In May of 2018, the band set up shop in Melbourne’s Aviary Recording Studiowith engineers Fraser Montgomery and Nick Edin to begin work on the album. Co-produced by Tracy McNeil and Dan Parsons, the first single Stars became a flagship for the shinier, more contemporary pop sound the band were striving for, whilst still retaining the emotional depth and intelligence fans of McNeil’s music have come to love.
With the first single mixed overseas by the highly acclaimed Nashville based Jordan Lehning, for the remainder of the album, Parsons and McNeil turned to Melbourne’s Alex O’Gorman (Angie McMahon, Dan Parsons and Big Smoke) at Little Wayne in Collingwood.
Within the broad strokes of Americana music, Tracy McNeil & The GoodLifehave refined their own palette, expanding on their distinctive alt-country roots, culminating in a body of work that many believe is the band’s finest to date.
This winter McNeil will tour internationally, embarking on a summer Canadian tour alongside acclaimed singer-songwriter and GoodLife guitarist Dan Parsons - returning late September to release and tour the new album nationally in Australia.
